Achillea Asteraceae Thrives in dry, poor soil; in rich soil it flops and is short-lived. Agapanthus Amaryllidaceae It flowers best pot-bound; overwinter bright, cool (5–8 °C) and fairly dry. Alcea Malvaceae Against hollyhock rust, strip spotted lower leaves and avoid wetting the foliage. Allium Amaryllidaceae Cut chives 3–4 cm above the base to regrow; toxic to dogs and cats. Anemone Ranunculaceae Japanese anemones are slow to establish but hard to remove later – choose their spot well. Antirrhinum Plantaginaceae Pinch out the tips of young plants for bushier growth and more flower spikes. Aquilegia Ranunculaceae It self-seeds freely – cut off the seed pods if you don't want it to spread. Argyranthemum Asteraceae Deadhead regularly for continuous flowers; overwinter it bright and cool. Aster Asteraceae Loves sunny, well-drained, limy spots; it rots in wet winters. Astilbe Saxifragaceae Never let it dry out – in summer drought the leaves brown quickly.
