Helianthus Asteraceae An annual; sow directly in place in mid-May and stake tall varieties. Helleborus Ranunculaceae Remove the old, spotted leaves before flowering for a better display and less fungal disease. Hemerocallis Asphodelaceae Each flower lasts a day but a stem keeps producing buds for weeks; toxic to cats. Heuchera Saxifragaceae Every 3–4 years replant deeper or divide in spring, as the crown lifts out of the soil. Hibiscus Malvaceae Don't turn or move it while in bud, or the buds will drop. Hosta Asparagaceae Protect the emerging shoots from slugs in spring – blue-leaved kinds are tougher. Hyacinthus Asparagaceae Forcing needs 10–12 weeks of dark, cold (5–9 °C) pre-chilling. Hydrangea Hydrangeaceae Blue on acidic soil, pink on alkaline; only thin out bigleaf hydrangeas in spring.
