Crassula Crassulaceae The jade plant flowers in winter after a cool (10–15 °C), dry autumn. Crataegus Rosaceae Drought-tolerant and great as an urban hedge; as bonsai it can be pruned hard in spring. Crocosmia Iridaceae In colder areas mulch the corms thickly in autumn. Crocus Iridaceae Let the foliage yellow fully before mowing the grass over the corms. Cryptomeria Cupressaceae It turns bronze in winter and greens up again in spring – this is not a disease. Ctenanthe Marantaceae Use soft, lime-free water; hard water browns the leaf edges. Curcuma Zingiberaceae The leaves die back in autumn – store the rhizome dry at about 15 °C until spring. Curio Asteraceae String of pearls likes a shallow, wide pot; wrinkled pearls signal thirst. Cycas Cycadaceae Every part is highly toxic, especially the seeds – keep away from pets. Cyclamen Primulaceae Flowers longest when cool (12–16 °C); water from below and keep the tuber dry. Cylindropuntia Cactaceae Its barbed spines lodge in skin – handle it only with thick gloves or tongs. Cymbidium Orchidaceae Summer it outdoors; cool autumn nights around 10 °C trigger the flower spikes. Cymbopogon Poaceae Overwinter it bright above 10 °C with less water; divide the clump in spring. Cyperus Cyperaceae A bog plant – always keep water in the saucer. Cypripedium Orchidaceae Plant it in part shade in loose, humus-rich gritty soil that never waterlogs.
