Lagerstroemia Lythraceae It only flowers well after hot summers – plant it by your sunniest, warmest wall. Lantana Verbenaceae Prune hard in spring; overwinter bright at 5–10 °C and on the dry side. Larix Pinaceae A deciduous conifer – it turns gold and sheds its needles in autumn, which is normal. Lathyrus Fabaceae The more you pick, the more it flowers – don't let the pods ripen. Laurus Lauraceae Overwinter potted bay bright and frost-free; it takes topiary pruning well. Lavandula Lamiaceae Cut back by a third after flowering, never into old wood – it will not regrow there. Lepidium Brassicaceae Ready to cut in 7–10 days on damp cotton or soil – keep sowing in succession. Leucanthemum Asteraceae Cut back after flowering and divide every 3 years, or the centre dies out. Leuchtenbergia Cactaceae Its long tubercles look like leaves; it needs a deep, sharply drained pot. Leucojum Amaryllidaceae It wants moist soil – ideal by streams or ponds in part shade. Levisticum Apiaceae One plant feeds a family – it reaches 1.5–2 m and wants deep, rich soil. Ligustrum Oleaceae Can be clipped twice a year; the berries are poisonous, so take care around children. Lilium Liliaceae Even the pollen can kill cats – keep lilies out of homes with cats. Lithops Aizoaceae Do not water while the old leaf pair shrivels (winter–spring); give water in autumn when it flowers. Lobelia Campanulaceae Cut it back by half in midsummer and feed – it will flower again until frost. Lobivia Cactaceae Needs a cool, dry winter and full sun for its vivid flowers (now often included in Echinopsis). Lobularia Brassicaceae After a midsummer lull, shear it back by a third and it carpets with flowers again. Lonicera Caprifoliaceae Keep the roots shaded and the shoots in sun – it reduces aphids and mildew.
