Dahlia Asteraceae Lift the tubers after the first frost and store them dry and frost-free. Darlingtonia Sarraceniaceae The cobra lily needs cool roots – water with cold water in summer. Davallia Davalliaceae Its furry “rabbit’s foot” rhizomes creep over the pot edge – do not bury them. Delosperma Aizoaceae In the garden winter wet kills it, not frost – plant it in gravelly, sloping ground. Delphinium Ranunculaceae Cut the stems back after the first flush and it reblooms in September. Dendrobium Orchidaceae Nobile types only flower after 6–8 weeks of cool (10–12 °C), dry rest. Dianthus Caryophyllaceae Likes limy, free-draining soil; don't cover it in winter or it will rot. Dieffenbachia Araceae Its sap causes painful swelling in the mouth – keep away from children and pets. Digitalis Plantaginaceae A biennial – let it self-seed to keep it going each year; every part is highly toxic. Dionaea Droseraceae Only rain or distilled water using the tray method; it needs 3–4 months of cold (0–10 °C) winter rest. Dischidia Apocynaceae An epiphyte – grow it in bark or moss and let it dry slightly between waterings. Discocactus Cactaceae Warmth-loving; its scented white flowers open at night from the cephalium. Disocactus Cactaceae Its trailing stems look best in a hanging basket; keep it cool and on the dry side in winter. Dracaena Asparagaceae Sensitive to fluoride – use rested or filtered water against brown tips. Drosera Droseraceae The Cape sundew is the easiest carnivore – bright light and always-wet, lime-free soil.
